A CALL FOR HELP
Logic’s VMA’s performance includes a message on suicide prevention
This year’s VMA’s (Video Music Awards) in August contained a positive message portrayed by Logic, a prominent rapper also known as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II: The song was titled, “1-800-273-8255” as a display of the national suicide prevention hotline which was present all over the floor of the stage as well. Featured in this touching call for change were 50 suicide attempt survivors who all wore the message “you are not alone.”
According to John Draper, the director of the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the service received the second highest volume of calls in the history of the service the very day of Logic’s performance. This demonstrates that there are people all over the world who are struggling emotionally but remain silent and, only with some serious encouragement, reach out for the help that they need. This performance served as a great reminder for those struggling that there is always help available; but also reminded us all to be mindful and kind to everyone.
Logic’s performance was truly meaningful to many of his fans as it didn’t just discuss depression and suicide but, more importantly, how to fight past it, and help others do the same. The success of the song can’t even be measured by tbe increase in calls because there are still many people out there who may hear his song on the radio and be encouraged for another day. A kind word goes a long way.
As a student of SHS, I would love to see this type of constructive reminder be present more often within the school and community for those who need the support. While the discussion on suicide may be uncomfortable or disconcerting, Logic’s reminder that it may be prevented with a few caring words or the strength to reach for help should really be common knowledge.
