Black Mirror
First airing December of 2011, British series Black Mirror takes on a new cast and plot line in every episode. Although each episode is one of its kind, audiences are reminded of the dangers of technology throughout every season, making each episode connect through a widespread theme of techno-paranoia. This eye opening series displays very shocking and harsh scenes that help to display such a compelling message. If you’re interested in a thriller filled endless mind twists, then Black Mirror is the show for you.
The End of The F***ing World
This brash, absurdist, and borderline offensive show follows the life of two runaway teens, James and Alyssa. Alyssa, the rude and misunderstood teen, and James, the introverted, self diagnosed psychopath, run away from their deadbeat English town in hopes to find enlightenment, love and meaning in life. As their dysfunctional love story continues–they find themselves in the middle of a murder case and a criminal chase. While at first the show is sometimes intolerable and hard to watch, it focuses on the unsung difficulties of young life: angst, adolescent confusion and anxiety.
Dark
Released last fall, Netflix’s first German series, Dark, explores the unknown possibilities of the third dimension. Set in 2019 in the small town of Winden, the plot line follows the life of Jonas, a teen who has just lost his father to suicide and is struggling to understand the reason behind his death. After two local children go missing, an abundance of the town’s past secrets are revealed leading Jonas to investigate in the disappearances which opens up the introduction of two different storylines taking place in 1953 and 1986. Traveling through both times can only take place by way of a wormhole which only adds a deeper layer to the already complex storyline. This gripping series will keep you guessing until the very end and maybe even have you wondering just what is possible in our world.
Atypical
Atypical, created in late 2017, focuses on the life of Sam, an eighteen year old autistic teen as he finds his way through life, independence and romance in high school. His journey to find a girlfriend highlights on the social and emotional difficulties that autism brings to an individual, and a family. Due to Sam’s newfound independence, it throws the rest of his family into a new season of life, as his mother stumbles onto a new, life-changing path of finding new meaning as his bold sister and misunderstood father search for better understanding on what “normal” means in regard to their family.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
After being rescued from a bunker for the past 15 years, Kimmy Schmidt is ready to go out into the world and learn. This happy-go-lucky, comedic show follows the life of Kimmy Schmidt, a young woman who goes to New York City with hopes of making a name for herself, apart from being the “victim” of a kidnapping. With plenty of comedic mishaps and dashes of romance on the side, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one for the whole family to watch.
