Halloween means movie marathons for many high schoolers who’ve decided to ditch trick or treating, but rather than just digging through old movies, pick these great flicks.
10. Fun Size ~ PG-13
A newer Halloween movie that came out in 2012, this movie features well-known actors such as Victoria Justice and Chelsea Handler. This relatable movie Wren, a high schooler who had hoped to go to her crush’s Halloween party, is stuck trick or treating with her younger brother. Things really aren’t as boring as she assumed.
9. The Corpse Bride ~ PG
As a kid, this movie may have seemed scary, but now it’s the perfect animation for an older audience. When things go wrong with his wedding rehearsal, Victor, voiced by Johnny Depp, accidentally marries a corpse who takes him to the underworld.
8. A Nightmare on Elm Street ~ R
This is truly a horrifying flick, especially for those who aren’t into scary movies. In this film, a group of teenagers are terrorized in their dreams by serial killer Freddy Krueger, only to find out that their dreams become reality. After this movie, you’re supposed to have nightmares.
7. Rocky Horror Picture Show ~ R
Definitely one of the crazier Halloween movies out there, the Rocky Horror Picture show is a must see. A musical classic about embracing one’s individuality, it’s not so much of a scary movie as it is a strange comedy.
6. Friday the 13th ~ R
If you’ve ever wondered where hockey mask costumes originated, then this movie is the answer to that question. This film about a cursed group of counselors will make you rethink all summer camps, and is a great thriller.
5. The Shining ~ R
Possibly one of the most well known horror movies of all time, The Shining is another classic that will serve you well. A child who has the ability to speak to spirits and a father who goes insane make this movie hard to forget when it comes to Halloween.
4. Halloween ~ R
Who doesn’t love a good movie about a serial killer? After killing his sister when he was six, Michael Myers escapes from jail and once again begins to cause violent chaos. This film is another spine-tingling story, complete with a stalker and a masked villain.
3. Halloweentown ~ G
Ask anyone, and there’s a good chance that they will tell you that one of the Halloweentown movies is their favorite. The original follows Marnie, the oldest daughter as she learns how to become a witch and must save Halloweentown from a demon.
2. Hocus Pocus ~ PG
At number 2, this movie is truly one of the all-time best Halloween movies there is. When a teenager moves to Salem, Massachusetts, his skepticism causes him to awaken a group of old witches, who he must stop from becoming immortal.
1. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown ~ G
It can be great to revisit this always trustworthy classic. Let’s all be honest here, what is Halloween without Snoopy and the Gang? Sometimes it’s just better to ditch the scary movies and go with this old animation.
