With Student Council’s MORP dance rapidly approaching you may be asking yourself, what is a MORP dance and what happened to the annual Sadie Hawkins dance? MORP is prom spelt backwards, and that’s basically what the dance is. Instead of wearing long dresses like you would at prom you wear short dresses and the girls ask the guys to the dance. But wait, if you are thinking this sounds just like the Sadies Hawkins’ dance, you are correct. Basically nothing for our spring dance has changed. All the student council did was change the name, which leads to the question—why not just keep the name Sadies? Well, it turns out that after taking a closer look, this call for a rebrand is part of a bigger picture. The Sadie Hawkins dance has typically had lower attendance compared to other dances like Homecoming and Prom. This attendance problem is one that the student council is trying to solve, thus the rebrand. As it is a part of their job to encourage student involvement and make the high school experience more fun. The rebrand was initially Mrs. Rogets’ idea, as she sympathizes with students who feel left out and just wants kids to attend, whether they have a date or not. But instead of MORP, she suggested a full rebrand with something new, like a spring fling. But the majority of the student council didn’t love the idea. Calvin Dahlman, a freshmen student council member, jokingly proposed MORP. “It was my idea and I said it as a joke,” He shares, “but all the other options were pretty [bad] so then we decided to go with MORP because apparently no one has been showing up [to Sadies] so yeah I guess it might be cool and have more people show up.” Calvin shares that the class chose MORP as it was the best idea. And while the jury is still out on the success this rebrand will have, the reason for the rebrand is clear. Kids aren’t showing up and MORP is an attempt to change that, even if it is a controversial one.
