The USA had their biggest number of athletes yet for the 2026 Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics with a total of 232 athletes. Out of these athletes there were a total of 33 medals won, 12 of which were gold medals. The Winter Olympics has many events from speed skating and hockey to bobsledding, snowboarding, and many more. Some of these events are performed at breakneck speeds with any small mistake causing serious injury, even curling.
The gold medals won include both the men’s and women’s team winning gold medals against Canada, being the first gold medal for the men’s team since 1980. Our figure skating team brought home 2 gold medals, one in singles and one in teams. The figure skating single was won by Alysa Liu and the team that won contained 7 individuals including Ellie Kam, Daniel O’Shea, Madison Chock, Evan Bates, Alysa Liu, Ilia Malinin, and Amber Glenn. This is the first time the USA has won gold medals in team figure skating back to back, also winning in 2022 winter olympics in Beijing. Last but not least for skating was speed skating, both the 1000m and 500m long track were won for the men’s division. The 500m and 1000m were won by Jordan Stolz who also got a silver medal in the 1500m bringing home 3 medals from Milan.
The bobsled division took home one gold medal in the monobob for women’s bobsled. The athlete competing was Elana Meyers Taylor who over the years has gotten 6 olympic medals, 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze over the course of 16 years.
The skiing and snowboarding division in the 2026 Olympics brought home a total of 34 medals, 5 of which were gold. Breezy Johnson took a gold medal in Downhill Woman Alpine skiing, along with getting 4th in the women’s Team Alpine Combined. Also, in the Moguls Women’s Freestyle, Elizabeth Lemley received gold, she also got bronze in the dual moguls for this winter olympics. Also the Slalom Women’s Alpine was won by Mikaela Shiffrin who has the record for most Olympic gold medals of any U.S alpine skier. Her Olympic career started back in 2014 and has continued all the way to the 2026 winter games. The Halfpipe men’s freestyle was won by Alex Ferreira who has gotten 3 olympic medals though his career starting back in the Pyeongchang 2018 getting a silver medal and in Beijing 2022 getting a bronze medal and finally Milan 2026 getting old, all of his medals were won for the halfpipe men’s Freestyle division. Last but not least the U.S Aerials Team Mixed Freestyle won gold. Their team had Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran, and Chris Lillis. In this event the competitors get one jump off of the designated jump, their scores are combined together and the team with the highest score wins. Athletes can increase their score by doing progressively harder tricks.
