Point-Counterpoint: Mask Off

CP Staffers Conagher McCown and Peyton Mullen give their opinions on the recent removal of the mask mandate.

On March 23rd 2021, the Lake Pend Oreille School District board voted to remove the mask mandate. The meeting ended in a 3-2 resulting in the removal of the requirement. The school board backed this decision claiming that the cases have dropped into a “minimal” yellow risk level as determined by panhandle health. Is this warranted or an over reaction

Conagher:

Point:

Medical issues provided by the masks can be cutting off oxygen, leading to blood oxygen levels being extremely low. Others might not be able to wear them because it causes anxiety and panic attacks or a disability, which causes distress. Also masks can change the emotional state of the people, men often more than women said that they felt negative emotions while wearing them. Unable to converse freely can also lead to sadness, anger, and even depression.

Point:

Goes against personal freedom. The people should have the ability to choose whether or not to wear the face coverings. Most people are strong enough to fight this illness, plus vaccines are now in effect so people can go get the vaccine if they are still a little unsure about still catching the virus.

Point:

It divides good people, making what was considered normal two years ago into a goal people want to reach again. If we take the masks away, let the illness run its course like any normal flu, then we can get back to what once was. No more fighting over whether or not we should, no more dividing families or friends, back to the way it used to be. To be able to share the times we had spent together, seeing everyones beautiful faces again. How could anyone not want that?

Counterpoint:

Masks are scientifically proven to stop and slow the transmission of coronavirus by restricting the primary source of covid transmission according to ucsf, in late May, two hair stylists in Missouri had close contact with 140 clients while sick with COVID-19. Everyone wore a mask and none of the clients tested positive.

Counterpoint:

If we all wore masks covid would be under control in a matter of weeks. “Redfield told a JAMA Live webcast Tuesday, “If we could get everybody to wear a mask right now, I really think in the next four, six, eight weeks, we could bring this epidemic under control.”

Counterpoint:

It protects you and others from a virus that can not only kill but cause permanent damage as well. According to the Mayo clinic, Imaging tests taken months after recovery from COVID-19 have shown lasting damage to the heart muscle, even in people who experienced only mild COVID-19 symptoms. This increases the risk of heart failure and other complications The type of pneumonia often associated with COVID-19 can cause long-standing damage to the alveoli in the lungs. The resulting scar tissue can lead to long-term breathing problems. Even in young people, COVID-19 can cause strokes, seizures and Guillain-Barre syndrome — a condition that causes temporary paralysis. COVID-19 may also increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Some adults and children experience multisystem inflammatory syndrome after they have had COVID-19. In this condition, some organs and tissues become severely inflamed.
