BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

2227_new_orleans_pelicans-alternate-2014Monday the New Orleans Pelicans took on the Atlanta Hawks in the Smoothie King Center to strike an end to Atlanta’s 19-game winning streak. With the longest winning streak so far in this 2014-2015 NBA season, the loss does not affect their place as the number one best record in the east making them 40-9.

With a loss after 17 wins in a row, the Hawks will be a major threat in the playoffs and this loss will not throw them off their game at all. They are looking to move passed this loss and remain a major threat in the league.

This was Anthony Davis’s return from a one-game absence with a groin injury and he had a powerful, finishing with 29 points and 13 boards (8 being offensive). Omer Asik stepped up big and had 17 rebounds but only finishing with 9 points. Tyreke Evans with a surprising 12 assists was the most on the night for both teams.

Eric Gordon, Pelicans shooting guard also contributed to the scoring load, adding 20 points to the 15-point win. Gordon’s minutes were limited due to foul trouble and his backup Jimmer Fredette stepped up and added 10 points to the scoreboard.

The Hawks contributed to their loss with poor defense and rebounding. The Hawks were out rebounded by a whopping 20 rebounds, 52-32.

Jeff Teague was the high scorer for the Hawks with 21.

The game was somewhat close until about the middle of the fourth and then the Pelicans lead surged to double digits and the Hawks maintained the lead and finished the game with a 115-100 win.

The Hawks power forward Paul Millsap wasn’t to concerned saying, “we’ve got a lot of season left”. The rest of the team wasn’t to worried about the loss according to Paul Millsap.
