The SHS Christmas Choir Concert originally scheduled for December 20th was cancelled because of the snow days before winter break, but the show must go on. The four choirs will perform on Wednesday, January 17th to make up for the cancelled concert.

A large reason that the concert was not cancelled altogether was the time and effort put in by the ensembles. Because of the hours of practice and dedication, the choir chose to go through with the concert, despite the fact that it is out of season.

“The kids have put more than just the music into this,” Choir Teacher Jon Brownell said. “The kids put a lot of time and effort into the music.”

The choir attained additional practice by performing at local holiday events, singing on Spokane Public Radio and caroling throughout downtown Sandpoint.

“It’s kind of repetitive to have to go over the music after Christmas has already ended considering the fact that the Performing Choir does go out caroling almost every weekend [during the holiday season], and have to sing the same songs,” junior Kirsten Baker said.

The Holiday Concert was also rescheduled in light of its fundraising significance. The Chamber Choir compiled gift baskets prior to the original date, so the concert was necessary to keep them from going to waste.  Audience members will have the option to bid on a basket of their choice.

The funds raised from the baskets will go towards an upcoming Chamber Choir trip. The money raised by the other ensembles (Mixed Choir and Concert Choir) will go to transportation and competition fees.

“The biggest reason we’re doing this one is to help get our fundraising boosting and going up,” junior Devin O’Connell said. “So I’m glad it’s still on.”

Although it may seem that a Christmas concert in January wouldn’t bring in great numbers or revenue, the choir is expecting a good turnout.

“This happened once before,” Brownell said. “We had our Christmas concert in January and it was one of the biggest concerts we have ever had.”
