Distinguished Young Women is a long-standing program that has provided and taught so much to junior girls. It not only rewards scholarships but gives young women leadership, talent, and self-confidence. They teach many things to the girls that go through this program including public speaking skills and interview practice. Starting back in the 1950s, the program never fails to help women become their best selves. It is a competitive program where participants compete for scholarships in the following categories: academics, interview, skills, talent, fitness, and self-expression. It also provides opportunities for mentoring younger girls in the community. In Sandpoint, we’ve had many girls get so far with the skills they acquired through this program. We’ve even had girls win at the state level. Sandpoint’s most recent winner is Aurla Palmer. Aurla will now use the skills she has to help mentor the new girls competing. Practices start in January and the competition is March 25th. So put that date in your calendars and come support the program, as well as all the girls competing.
