FEMINISM CLUB CREATED AT SHS

Junior McCalee Cain hopes to spread awareness through new club

A new club at SHS has stirred discussion over what some consider a potentially controversial topic.

Junior McCalee Cain founded the fifty point eight club, a feminism club which she hopes will spread awareness about what feminism is, and isn’t, though the high school. Cain was inspired to start the club after researching feminism and hearing about personal stories from the women in her life.

“It’s really important and there’s a lot of misconceptions about it and my main goal was just to alter that perception of it,” she said.

Cain named the club the fifty point eight club after the population of the United States that is female.

Her club, as well as the name, as sparked some protests as well as several students who spoke about starting a 49.2 club for men.

Cain’s short term goals are to serve the greater community and the club has already taken action, with members writing thank you cards to the female teachers at SHS. Cain has shared ideas with members about a tampon tax, documentary nights, as well as discussions over various issues women face today.

“In the long term if I can alter the perception of feminism within just one person in the high school who will stop looking at it as radical female supremacy and see that it is actually gender equality and helps acknowledge the struggle that women still face then I would have succeeded,” she said.

The fifty point eight club meets either Tuesdays or Wednesdays weekly in S4 after school.
