SOCCER CLUB POWER RANKINGS

The ten best soccer clubs in the world this season

Two months into the seasons of the major European soccer leagues, teams have begun to establish themselves in their respective tables. Most of these names are similar to years past as per usual in the soccer world, where the same teams tend to consistently dominate due to the huge financial advantage. Other less rich teams, however, look to replicate what Leicester City did last season and defy all of the odds that are against them. Without further ado, here are the ten best soccer clubs in the world from the beginning of this season.

1. Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid, one of Spain’s three superpowers that often plays second fiddle to Barcelona and city rival Real Madrid, is having about as good a start to the season as a team can have. They currently are sitting atop La Liga with 18 points, the same as Real Madrid, but the most impressive part of their season so far has been their goal difference. Atletico, through only eight games, has an insane goal difference of +18. That number was already impressive at +12 after their seventh game, but it got blown up as Atletico demolished La Liga bottomfeeder Granada 7-1 to add to it significantly. Atletico has also been incredibly successful in the Champions League having won both of their games so far, including a win over Bayern in what was the same result of last year’s Champions League semifinal.

2. FC Bayern Munich

The best team in Germany is dealing with a new manager in Carlo Ancelotti, but so far it hasn’t mattered. Through seven games they have yet to take a loss, winning five and drawing in the other two. Both of those draws have been to teams in the top half of the table, so there is nothing to worry about with either of them. Robert Lewandowski has been his usual self in scoring goals, already netting five, and French midfielder Franck Ribery is leading the German Bundesliga with five assists. Bayern is also sitting nicely in the Champions League, winning one of their games and losing the other to Atletico Madrid to be at second in their group.

3. Real Madrid

The richest soccer club in the world is currently sitting at second in La Liga behind Atletico Madrid, but only on goal difference. Through eight games, they have yet to lose; however, they have three draws, so they have not quite shown that they are able to separate themselves from inferior competition yet. Injuries have been a large issue for Real so far, so that likely has contributed significantly to their somewhat disappointing start. They have been solid in the Champions League thus far, winning a game and drawing another with German power Borussia Dortmund to sit at second in their group.

4. Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s first season as manager got off to an excellent start, with City winning six of their first eight games, as well as a loss to a very good Tottenham Hotspur club and a draw with better-than-expected Everton. The koss and draw have come in consecutive matches, however, so they could be slipping a bit. Belgian star Kevin de Bruyne currently leads the Premier League in assists, and Sergio Aguero has five goals. Manchester City is also faring well in the Champions League, sitting second in their group behind Barcelona with a win and a draw.

5. Juventus

The best team in Italy got even better this summer, snagging one of the highest-touted transfers in the world in Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, who has already contributed six goals through the team’s first eight games. Juventus already has seven wins through those eight games, and the other game was a loss to what has so far been an underachieving Inter Milan club. They are currently first in the Italian Serie A and five points clear of the next-closest team. Juventus has played well so far in the Champions League, winning one game and drawing their other with Spanish club Sevilla.

6. Arsenal

The Gunners currently sit in second place in the English Premier League behind Manchester City but only goal difference. They have only lost one game, which was to a very good Liverpool club at the beginning of the season. Since then, they have 6 wins in 7 games, with their only draw being with last season’s champions, Leicester City. Their Champions League campaign has also gotten off to an excellent start, as they currently sit atop their table with a win and a draw with Paris Saint-Germain.

7. Paris Saint-Germain

The French superclub of recent years has not had as good a start to their title defense as expected, but they have still been solid and are currently sitting in second in the French Ligue 1. They have two losses in 9 games, but both came from teams currently sitting in the top four of the table. They have also done a good job in the opening of Champions League campaign, winning one of their games and drawing with Arsenal.

8. Barcelona

The start to Messi and Co.’s season has for the most part been good, but the mistakes they have made have been embarrassing. They do sit in fourth right now in La Liga with five wins and a draw, but they have two losses, and neither have been to good teams. The first came to Aleves, a club that had just been promoted from Spain’s second division and should not have been within a couple goals of Barcelona, much less win the game. The other came to Celta Vigo, which currently sits in the bottom half of the league. As for their Champions League campaign, Barcelona has found success, winning both of their game so far and topping their table.

9. Benefica

The traditional Portuguese superpower has gotten off to an excellent start this season, currently standing at the top of their table by 3 points, but they do have yet to play either of their two biggest rivals, FC Porto and Sporting Club, so they have not faced a real test yet. The beginning to their Champions League campaign has been rough, however, as they have only accumulated one point through two games and disappointedly sit at the bottom of their group.

10. OGC Nice

Nice, a team from French Ligue 1 that has been up and down in recent years, had a change in ownership this year, and it looks like the new funding for the team is paying off. Nice currently sits atop the table in Ligue 1, and they are four points ahead of next-best team. Through nine games, they have seven wins and only two draws. They have beaten some impressive teams, including Marseille and Olympique Lyon, which are both tied for the most championships in Ligue 1 history. Whether or not they can continue to win remains to be seen, but so far they have taken the soccer world by surprise.
