CROSS COUNTRY RACES OFF TO A GREAT SEASON
Runners prepare for first league race
This past weekend, Sandpoint High School’s Cross Country team had high placings at the Hayden Canyon Invitational. Taking the spotlight were both Junior Varsity teams who fought for 1st place, coming out on top against 18 other teams from the Inland Northwest.
Freshman Heather Wallace led the JV girls to their victory, finishing in fourth place and earning her spot on varsity. In total, five girls broke varsity standard, setting the pace for exciting achievements yet to come.
JV boys took command of their race, finishing with 50 points and a huge 21 point lead against the Dalles of Oregon. Sophomore Sloan Woodward crossed the line in 18th who was followed by teammates Juniors Hyrum Hunsaker and Kyle Almeida respectively.
Preparation for the team’s upcoming league race is already in the works. Coaches Matt and Angie Brass are putting their runners through a rigorous, yet steady training program to ensure their success throughout future races.
The Cross Country team has won three state titles, has had over 40 state qualifying teams, and has won ten state trophies.
Both the girls and boys teams are showing great strides in the early stages of their season. The Bulldog’s next race will be Saturday Oct. 1 in Lewiston.
