New Coach For The New Season

Brian Childs will be the new head boys basketball coach for the upcoming 21-22 season.

Brian Childs was named the new head baseball coach for the boys basketball team in late March. This came after the news that previous head coach, Wade Engelson, resigned early in the 20-21 season which led Mike Roos to take over the head coach role for the rest of the season.

“No one is more dedicated and passionate about the game of basketball and student athletes than coach Childs. This, along with his extensive experience, will help build the Bulldog basketball program” said athletic director Kris Knowles.

Childs grew up in Indiana and played on his high school’s state champion basketball team and later played college basketball at Florida College. Later, his love for the sport grew and he decided to start coaching the game.

Childs has coached basketball for 23 years and spent 16 of those years as a head coach.

Before taking this role as head coach at SHS he previously served as the head coach at Coeur d’Alene Charter and Eastbrook High in Marion, Indiana. He spent six seasons at Eastbrook before moving to Vancouver, Washington in 2018 to take over his most recent head coaching job at Heritage High School.

Childs is familiar with the Sandpoint area due to past coaching experience along with his previous time living in North Idaho. When asked why he took up the opportunity to become the head coach he responded with “I’ve known Mr. Knowles for a long time and he helped sell me on his vision of the potential here and what the program could become”. And from there he was sold.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the players and working with them to build off the experience they got last year and working in the younger grades to generate interest and an enjoyment of the game,” said Childs.
