October 7, 2015

Clara Bonet-Sallent is a junior foreign exchange student from Barcelona, Spain. The Cedar Post asked Bonet-Sallent about her impressions of Sandpoint since arriving in August.

What was your first impression of Sandpoint like?

“I really like it because I like the mountains next to the town because I can ski, you also have the beach too, so it’s perfect!”

What made you decide to become a foreign exchange student?

“I wanted to try new things and learn English and get out and see the world.”

What’s a cultural difference you see between here and your home?

“The thing you do with the flag [Pledge of Allegiance], we don’t do that.”

What other languages do you speak?

“Spanish, English, Catalan (spoken in Barcelona).”

Has something funny happened since you have been here?

“I went to Costco, and we don’t have that in Spain. I was so amazed everything was so big. I started shouting and screaming and doing snapchats and everyone was looking at me.”

What’s the difference between your host family and your actual family?

“My host family they are like 25 so they are more like siblings than parents.”

What’s something about your home country that Americans wouldn’t know?

“Catalonia wants to be apart from Spain and every 11th of September we celebrate a very big party to protest, because we [Catalonia] want to get away from Spain.”
