Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a Hispanic holiday where people believe their family members pass over into the real world from the spirit world; a time during the year where you can walk amongst your deceased loved ones. Although this may seem like a mysterious celebration, Evans Brothers Roastery and Matchwood Brewery is giving you a chance to experience it first hand on October 27th.

If you go to the festivities, there are many things to look forward to, one of these things being face painting. Your face will be painted to look like a sugar skull, something that usually happens in Mexico during Día de los Muertos. Other things to look forward to include making sugar skulls, which are made from granulated sugar and then pressed into sugar skull molds. After they dry, they can be decorated with things like frosting and feathers. Also, during the party there will be a screening of “Coco”, the Disney Pixar movie, where Día de los Muertos is brought to life on screen.

Music will also be featured during this event, a special guest being the Los Flacos band from Seattle. They start playing their music at 6:00 P.M and after they perform there will be a community procession from Matchwood Brewery to Evans Brothers. At 9:00 P.M. there will be a Dance Party, the music manned by guest DJ Boomerang.

Those who celebrate Dia de los Muertos also decorate something called an ofrenda. An ofrenda is an altar filled with pictures of those who have passed along with the things they loved, usually food, as offerings. Evans Brothers plans to create their own ofrenda during the party, and it is encouraged that you bring photos of your late family members with offerings if you would like.

If you plan on going to the Día de Los Muertos party, the festivities begin October 27th at 5:00 P.M. in the granary community near Evans Brothers Coffee. $5 dollar tickets are being sold at Evans Brothers. Limited special ticket are $15 and comes with a free pint glass and free face paint. If you can’t buy the ticket before the 27th, you can buy tickets at the door for $8.
